As memoirs go, Samuel Paul's book'A Life and Its Lessons' may be one of those special occasions when we can read and consider them in total earnest. In what comes across as a simple account of a man who went on to become a renowned scholar and an institution builder from extremely humble origins in a small town of the pre-Independence India of the 1930s, is actually the story of how a man can realize an ambition worthy of his values, ideals and the good of his community at large.

Chapter 1 sets the tone for Paul's writing for put quite simply, Paul begins with the beginning: as a first-born to a Syrian Christian couple Annamma, his mother whom he describes as a woman of sheer determination and grit, a confident and a friendly personality laced with an independent streak and a sense of humour, and Samuel Kutty, his father, a soft spoken, calm and patient man with a great deal of experience in business …
