The exploratory research uses the framework of Communication Studies and Sociology to demonstrate how restructuring of social hierarchies impacts language use in the Business Communication class of an Indian management institute. The study examines how dominant communication practices are being subverted by issues of identity, power, privilege, sociopolitical forces and technological transformation. It suggests that instructors teaching Business Communication may benefit by aligning their pedagogy to the sensibilities of the present generation of management students. The paper is premised on the interpretivist belief that meanings and identities are socially constructed through respondents’ engagement with everyday realities. Twenty-two in-depth personal interviews were conducted with participants of the postgraduate programme in management and instructors of Business Communication. Further, a questionnaire was administered to 51 participants of an executive management programme to understand attitudes towards language use at the workplace. The responses indicate that a variant of indigenised English appears to be acquiring legitimacy amongst young professionals, while instructors continue to emphasise grammatical accuracy, blindsided by their training in language and literature. Therefore, to cater to the next generation of managers, instructors may have to shed their bias against non-formal expressions in English, and consider focusing on the functional aspects more important for intra-national purposes.

Well-intentioned efforts to address gender discrimination at the workplace are subverted when people claim concessions as entitlement. Vikram Rana, chief editor and head of production at Margot Financial Securities, Mumbai, was engaged in an energy-sapping battle of nerves with his associate, Neha Salian, an overbearing woman older to him whose workplace ethics were not up to the mark. The management of Margot wanted to promote a women-friendly workplace, and had instituted a Women’s Grievance Redressal Committee in keeping with best practices in the industry. Fearing that a complaint to the grievance committee might mar his reputation and career, Vikram was careful in his interactions with his direct report. Neha defaulted on her duties using familial responsibilities as an excuse, and exploited Vikram’s inability to confront her openly. He yielded to her manipulation, but retaliated by pointing out her professional inadequacies. As matters spiralled out of control, Vikram feared his attempts to enforce professionalism would be misrepresented as harassment.The case explores the interplay of gender dynamics and entrenched biases that contribute to toxic relations. It examines the issue of victim-turned-persecutor through different perspectives. Was Vikram an ineffectual boss who succumbed to bullying? Or was he an over-punctilious bully who was difficult to please?

The case explores the dilemma faced by one such software engineer when her ideas are repeatedly poached by her team leader. He claims credit for her ideas, while her contribution goes unrecognized. Although she is competent and committed, in many ways she is a cultural misfit at her workplace. The principles to which she adheres make it difficult for her to accept the aggressive self-promotion that characterizes the behaviour of her team leader. She has grown up believing that one's work should speak for itself; that merit and hard work will be rewarded; that stealing other people's ideas is unethical. She has to strike a balance between cooperation and competition, assert herself and claim credit for work done, and yet ensure she does not antagonize her peers and seniors.

Stealing My Thunder Systematically

This article offers perspectives on those who control the Bhojpuri media industry in Mumbai, India, and delimit what is to be shown. Bhojpuri is a dialect of Hindi spoken in parts of the north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The influx of migrants from these regions to different parts of India has led to a resurgence of interest in the Bhojpuri media, and has drawn fly-by-night operators to the industry. To cater to the migrants' needs, ribald action romances are produced; but this very bawdiness hamstrings attempts to widen the audience base. Sleaze, Slur... and the Search for a Sanitized Identity: Bhojpuri Media at a Crossroads

Using Cultural Studies as the framework, this study investigates how north Indian migrants living in Kandivali east, Mumbai, exercise agency and appropriate Bhojpuri media texts to maintain their regional identity. Bhojpuri, a dialect of Hindi, has emerged as the lingua franca of these migrants hailing from the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Beleaguered by the identity politics of the host city, the migrants turn to the Bhojpuri media to sustain the shared cultural beliefs that permeate their social relations. Familiar images in the media texts ensure continuity with tradition, feeding the resurgent pride of the community. The migrants’ aggressive defence of all things Bhojpuri, as well as their desire to sanitise Bhojpuri media of its bawdiness, is a manifestation of their embattled identities seeking validation. This article examines how the Bhojpuri media are intertwined with the migrants’ everyday realities. The media reinforce gender roles, alleviate anxieties and gratify desires vicariously. Media representations meld cultural memory with the migrants’ newly acquired understanding of the metropolis. In the process, hybrid identities are being fashioned by people on different points of the socio-economic axis.

The Bhojpuri media are closely entwined with the migrants’ everyday realities and social interactions; they reinforce notions of ideal gender roles, alleviate anxieties associated with acculturation, gratify desires vicariously and are instruments of pseudo-empowerment. The study examines how certain conventions and formulas in Bhojpuri cinema strengthen perceptions of the ‘Bhojpuriya’ identity amongst the migrants, ensuring that the cultural offerings reflect their perspectives on social and cultural issues. Bhojpuri Cinema: Reasserting the 'Bhojpuria' Roots of Migrants in Mumbai

Madhusri Shrivastava are invariably bypassed in favour of men at selection interviews and appraisals. Indeed, research has revealed that women's social conditioning often predisposes them to underplay their achievements. It is noteworthy that feminist scholars such as Juliet Mitchell (1966) had drawn attention to the insidious ways in which domestic work, maternity, sex, and the socialization of children are manipulated to create intangible mental bonds in women, making their inferiority and inequality seem natural to them.A survey carried out by Powell and Graves (2003) indicates that a good manager is universally seen as possessing predominantly masculine characteristics. They contend that this' masculine stereotype of the good manager is self reinforcing and inhibits the expression of femininity by women in management positions'(pp. 137-39). However, this general perception is in contradistinction to recent studies that link modest behaviour to emotional intelligence, one of the distinguishing characteristics of transformational leadership (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2013). A considerable body of research in management posits that the masculine traits valorised in discussions on leadership are scarcely the ones modern organizations need for success. On the contrary, the purportedly feminine qualities of empathy and humility, and a reasonable ability to question the validity of one's own decisions, help create an environment conducive to personal and professional growth.
