Traditional approaches of food security largely draw from neoliberal prescriptions, which focus on supply side issues of improving productivity and efficiency through market mechanisms. Reflections on the oral accounts of 30 migrants from eastern India to the capital city of Gujarat, India, provide two important insights regarding food security related issues. First, in terms of the lived realities of these migrants, traditional approaches of food security are inadequate to address their concerns as they exacerbate their food related vulnerabilities. Second, economic democracy and food sovereignty approaches are more helpful in addressing food related vulnerabilities as these approaches engage more comprehensively with the multidimensional socioeconomic vulnerabilities of the migrants from the perspective of equity and justice.

Exploring realities of food security: Oral accounts of migrant workers in urban India

Factorial designs with randomization restrictions are often used in industrial experiments when a complete randomization of trials is impractical. In the statistics literature, the analysis, construction, and isomorphism of factorial designs have been extensively investigated. Much of the work has been on a case-by-case basis—addressing completely randomized designs, randomized block designs, split-plot designs, etc. separately. In this paper, we take a more unified approach, developing theoretical results and an efficient relabeling strategy to both construct and check the isomorphism of multistage factorial designs with randomization restrictions. The examples presented in this paper particularly focus on split-lot designs.

Compensation is a very important issue as it represents the material, moral and social returns obtained by an employee for expending her labour in an organization. Compensation is a central aspect of the employment relationship as it directly decides what employees receive from the organization. Compensation may have different tangible and intangible components which are determined by numerous factors. Executive perceptions of these determinants are important indicators of how they experience the phenomena of compensation. An iterative - interpretative review of literature shows that there are multiple factors that affect the processes of compensation design, and employees desire to be heard in each of these processes.

A study of executive perceptions of the determinants of compensation design and satisfaction

Caste identity determines social status in Indian society and given the hierarchical social stratification of the caste system, caste based social status is also associated with social advantage or disadvantage depending on the position occupied by a particular caste in the hierarchy. The lower the social strata to which the caste belongs, the higher the social disadvantage. The pursuit of livelihoods through traditional caste based occupational instrumentalities in this status stratification frame of reference is also linked to the advantage-disadvantage structural continuum. Specific castes have been traditionally associated with caste occupations which also in a sense have contributed to the constitution of the social status as well as the associated social advantage-disadvantage contours of the specific caste. Interesting research questions emerge in the context of change from traditional social arrangements towards newer expressions of caste under the impact of multiple social, political, economic forces leading to individual and collective initiatives to offset the hereditary social disadvantages of rigid social stratification systems. A study of 40 Nadar caste entrepreneurs in Southern India examines how the caste collectivity has offset and achieved social emancipation in the context of a changing environment characterized by civic equality and achieved status based opportunity through the instrumentality of retail entrepreneurship. © Common Ground, Jerome Joseph, Patturaja Selvaraj, All Rights Reserved.
