Operation Management and Quantitative Techniques

The integrated procurement, production and distribution planning (IPPDP) problem consists of multiple suppliers who supply raw materials to multiple plants to produce a single product to meet the demand in multiple time horizons. The present research focuses on the analysis of the effect of backorders on the IPPDP problem in a three-echelon supply chain that consists of suppliers, manufacturers and retailers. The IPPDP problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model and the optimal solution is obtained with the solver LINGO. The total net profit obtained for the scenario involving lost sales is compared with that for the scenario which involves lost sales and backordering. For a set of problem instances, an increase of 10.29% in the average total net profit and 4.80% in the average fill rate is obtained for the lost sales and backordering scenario compared to the lost-sales-only scenario. © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

A study on the impact of backorder sales on an integrated supply chain

Cost minimisation is one of the key challenges faced by logistic industries across the world. As the number of customers increases, it becomes absolutely essential to make maximum utilisation of the existing resources to ensure quality customer service. The huge amount of data available with the firm under study is analysed using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and turned into valuable insights that could be used by management in taking right informed decision. The results show that about half of the transporters have efficiency value less than the average, indicating a huge scope for improvement. Related suggestions for efficiency improvement using DEA slack results are also presented. The decision making units (DMU) that are considered are the individual trucks. The findings of the study provide useful insights to the management in decision making at all the three levels, viz. operational, tactical and strategic. A DEA approach for evaluation of operational efficiency: Case study of a logistics firm

This paper analyses the modal shift from a primary road-based to coastal shipping-based freight distribution. A mathematical model is developed to optimize the coastal shipping route planning under a multimodal distribution scenario. The model is applied to a case study of the outbound automotive logistics in India. Exploratory insights on the enablers and challenges to adopting coastal shipping-based distribution are presented along with the route configuration and the level of modal shift achievable based on the model results. The results of the study suggest that the current business and regulatory environment is appropriate to achieve almost one-third shift to intermodal coastal shipping, although investments in infrastructure and substantial cost reductions in ship and port operations need to be implemented to ensure further modal shift. Analysing the modal shift from road-based to coastal shipping-based distribution – a case study of outbound automotive logistics in India

In this article, we consider a simple step-stress model for exponentially distributed lifetime units. As failure rate is lower at the initial stress level, therefore, it is important to pay more attention to the stress changing time. Here, we consider a simple step-stress model where the stress level changes either after a prefixed time or after a prefixed number of failures, whichever occurs later. It ensures a prefixed minimum number of failures at the first stress level and also sets up a control on the expected experimental time. We have obtained the maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters along with their exact distributions. The monotonicity properties of the maximum likelihood estimators have been established here, and it can be used to construct the exact confidence intervals of the unknown parameters. We provide approximate and bias-corrected accelerated bootstrap confidence intervals of the model parameters. We also define an optimality criteria and based on that obtain an optimal stress changing time for a given sample size. Finally, an extensive simulation study has been performed to asses the performance of the proposed methods and provide the analyses of two data sets for illustrative purpose.

This article documents the experience of addressing improvements in the operational parameters of an ophthalmology clinic in central India. Shortcomings in the operating parameters of throughput, capacity use and patient waiting times required the immediate attention of senior management. Based on elementary data analysis, the present study advocates a scheduling system that improves all three of these operating parameters. Several administrative options to improve the overall performance of the system were identified. For a deeper understanding of the design issues, a simulation-based model was developed. The results of the simulation model were used to prioritise action areas that needed system improvement.

A Game Theory based approach in modelling incentives for Health Care oriented Public-Private-Partnership Contract

In the literature, the Linnik, Mittag-Leffler, Laplace and asymmetric Laplace distributions are the most known examples of geometric stable distributions. The geometric stable distributions are especially useful in the modeling of leptokurtic data with heavy-tailed behavior. They have found many interesting applications in the modeling of several physical phenomena and financial time-series. In this paper, we define the Linnik Lévy process (LLP) through the subordination of symmetric stable Lévy motion with gamma process. We discuss main properties of LLP like probability density function, Lévy measure and asymptotic forms of marginal densities. We also consider the governing fractional-type Fokker–Planck equation. To show practical applications, we simulate the sample paths of the introduced process. Moreover, we give a step-by-step procedure of the parameters estimation and calibrate the parameters of the LLP with the Arconic Inc equity data taken from Yahoo finance. Further, some extensions of the introduced process are also discussed.

Linnik Lévy process and some extensions

In this paper, we study the fractional Poisson process (FPP) time-changed by an independent L&eacute;vy subordinator and the inverse of the L&eacute;vy subordinator, which we call TCFPP-I and TCFPP-II, respectively. Various distributional properties of these processes are established. We show that, under certain conditions, the TCFPP-I has the long-range dependence property, and also its law of iterated logarithm is proved. It is shown that the TCFPP-II is a renewal process and its waiting time distribution is identified. The bivariate distributions of the TCFPP-II are derived. Some specific examples for both the processes are discussed. Finally, we present simulations of the sample paths of these processes.

Fractional Poisson Process Time-Changed by Lévy Subordinator and Its Inverse

Mafia offer is an unbelievably good offer that a company makes to its customers; the attractiveness of the offer makes it impossible for the customers to decline the offer and difficult for the competitors to match it [Cox, James, III, and John Schleier. 2010. Theory of Constraints Handbook. McGraw-Hill]. This study analyses the performance of one such offer that a producer of deteriorating items can make to its customers in the supply chain, such as retailers and distributors. The results from the analytical model show that the mafia offer increases the profits of both the producer and the retailer in a deteriorating items' supply chain. The efficacy of the proposed offer is tested for multiple combinations of ordering cost, wholesale price, and the retailer's cash constraints. The experimental results suggest that the producer would be able to increase its profits by more than 60%, for a given level of retailer's profits, owing to the mafia offer. The availability of the existing items offered by the retailer will increase significantly, despite a reduction in the retailer's inventory levels. The offer will result in an average increase of over 56% in the variety of items held by the retailer. The producer will also be able to command significantly higher margins (more than 44%) from the retailer for the existing items without adversely affecting the retailer's profitability.
